Next Week Career Focus

We have been getting acquainted with AKCIS program, which is the Alaska Careers Information website for students. It has a lot of great resources and we have taken assessments to help identify careers of interest. Students have chosen to have several people come in and each student will be responsible for TWO interview questions, regarding our guest’s career.

We need to find some career people in the following categories (who would be willing to come and be interviewed by students)
Engineer
Court Clerk
Security Guard
Writer

These are the career areas we have people secured to be involved:
Software developer
Actor
Crime Lab Investigator
Lawyer

Next week:
We are having guests in the building for Career Talk Interviews.  We will dress professional and come prepared (well slept, groomed, etc.)

Our schedule will be laid out as such:

Monday: Portfolio Showcases to advisory, prepare questions for career guests
Wednesday: Wayne Mitchell, Actor & co-founder of TBA Theatre
Friday: Russell Waggoner, Software developer & Smart Phone App Creator

Team Builders

Tuesday, Oct 30. Team Builders
Ms. Carton realized that as an advisory, we had not done team builders as of yet. So, she dedicated the first half of advisory to playing some team building games as well as just generally spending time as an advisory.

We had a lot of laughs, and a lot of fun. Much needed for the Carton Cult.

Careers Portfolio Standard:

CC.01.LT.07.03
Presents portfolio to advisory.
• Compiles samples of projects for presentation.
• Work is neat and easy to read.
• Explains what lessons were learned and why they are important.
• Presents completed work to a small group or whole advisory using
feedback from peers to make at least one improvement.

Your assignment:
1  .    You will be checking your Google Site called Advisory portfolio to ensure it is complete and
thorough (meaning all questions are answered)
2  .    Check for spelling errors or places where it doesn’t quite make sense.
3  .    Create a new post within your google doc that is titled, “3 Lessons Reflection of My First Quarter”. Layout like this: (3 times, 3 different lessons)
Lesson 1: I learned not to rely on my group members to beavailable.
How I learned this: A group member was absent on the day we were supposed to present, and we all ended up getting a “No Basis”
How this impacted me: I ended up looking like a fool because I had done a lot of work but it looked like I wasn’t prepared.
Next Time: I will make sure and use that awesome jump drive Ms. Carton gave me.

4  .    Present your Google Site (and samples) to your small group. Give two plus/deltas for each person.
5  .    Go back to your site and apply those changes.
6  .    Make sure you do a self-reflection as well.
     AFTER ALL PRESENTATIONS ARE DONE:
7  .    Answer the questions below as you turn this in. This will remain anonymous.
1.    What was the positive element of doing this project today?
2.    What was the challenge about doing this project today?
3.    Who was the person you felt was the most focused? How so?
4.    Who was the person you felt was least focused? How so?
5.    What might make it go better next time?
